Alliance boys to benefit from free IT programme
The East African Standard, July 13, 2002About 45 students and four teachers from Alliance High School are to benefit from a free six week web programming course provided by a US-based organisation, Massachusset Institute of Technology (MIT).
The school's principal, Mr Christopher Khaemba, says Alliance is the first African school to benefit from the MIT- African Internet Technology Initiative (AITI) dubbed JAVA programme, which was founded two years ago.
A team of trainers from MIT, currently conducting training at the school, say their goal is to enhance Information Technology (IT) around the world, especially to disadvantaged nations.
Teachers who benefit from the programme are expected to continue teaching the programme to other students, when the MIT crew leaves the country.
The Java programming skills was founded by among others, two former students of Alliance High School, who are engineering and computer science graduates of MIT.
The programme is also aimed at developing a long term cultural and technical understanding between the MIT community and its African counterparts.
According to an MIT trainer Mr. Yaron Binur, one of the MIT trainers, they are pleased with Alliance High school's response to the programme, which "reflects the efforts of Kenyan students".
"The school's education standards are remarkable. The students have the potential and they are getting things very fast," said Yaron.
